Students work in small groups to create a pamphlet aimed at middle school students that explains what infectious diseases are, describes how the body responds to infections, and recommends prevention measures, such as vaccinations and frequent hand washing.  Tell students they should include both text and illustrations in their pamphlets.

Teams work in small groups to write a movie about the invasion of a pathogen into a body and the immune system's response to that invasion.  The movie should take the perspective of a neutral observer, the invading pathogens, or a cell involved in the body's defense.  Tell groups the movie should be creative but also identify the kind of pathogen, explain how the pathogens got into the body, and accurately describe the immune system's response.  Have groups perform their plays for the class.
